MANGALORE, DEC. 7. The State committee of the Indian Union Muslim League has urged the Minister for Wakf and Animal Husbandry, Mirajuddin Patel, to be apolitical in appointments to Wakf committees. A league delegation headed by the organising secretary, C. Ahmad Jamal, called on Mr. Patel during his visit to the district and submitted a memorandum to him. Mr. Jamal said Wakf committees were legal religious bodies and of importance to Muslims. The appointments had been based on political affiliations so far, and this was unfair to Muslims in other parties or those without political leanings. Political appointments were also eroding the credibility of the committees that had direct control over mosques and dargahs registered with it. Mr. Jamal said appointments of people with political affiliations would make it difficult for the committees and Muslims to seek justice. Presidents of administrative committees of mosques and dargahs should be appointed, he suggested.
