Garbage segregation hits snag in multi-storeyed flats

By Akhila Seetharaman

CHENNAI, DEC. 7. THE Chennai Corporation is pleased with the way most city residents have taken to source segregation, but is unhappy with the response from residents of multi-storeyed buildings (MSBs).

Ironing out the problems with the MSBs will be the next step in the source segregation drive, according to Corporation Commissioner, M.P. Vijayakumar.

Unlike independent houses, multi-storeyed buildings need to store segregated garbage temporarily at a single point in the building before the Corporation's conservancy workers can collect it.

At present, most buildings do not have any provision for this. "We are going to visit each MSB and convince the building association to install common bins for residents to dump the segregated garbage," said Mr. Vijayakumar.

In areas where waste collection had been given to the private agency, CES Onyx, the Corporation will collect plastics and other recyclable waste once every two or three days.

No mixed garbage

Conservancy workers are being askednot to accept mixed garbage, Mr. Vijayakumar said. "The culture has to change and this is a slow process."

While conceding that it was too early to give concrete figures, Mr. Vijayakumar said the difference in the nature and quantity of garbage collected was becoming evident.

"By the end of the month we should be able to establish source segregation in the city substantially," he told The Hindu .

Residents of MSBs, however, wonder how much they will have to shell out to install two big bins in their complexes. An apartment complex with 20 to 25 households generates a sizable quantity of garbage everyday and would require large bins, which they want the Corporation to provide.

But Mr. Vijayakumar believes that that is not the Corporation's responsibility; he expects residents of the MSBs to do it themselves.
