Petrol prices have spiralled since the dismantling of the administered price mechanism for petroleum products on March 31, 2002. And thus began a reign of fleecing of passengers by autorickshaw drivers as the market-determined fuel pricing system sent petrol prices soaring from Rs. 28.49 in stages to the existing Rs. 41.25 a litre. Diesel price, meanwhile, moved up from Rs. 18.10 a litre to Rs. 29.30 now. On occasions, fuel prices even dropped. Between April 2002 and November 15, 2004, petrol prices were hiked on 20 occasions and came down nine times. While the autorickshaw unions clamour for an increase every time the fuel prices go up, they are silent when petrol and diesel prices drop. Petrol prices since January 1, 2004. January 1: Rs. 36.79 June 15: Rs. 38.96 July 31: Rs. 40.15 November 4: Rs. 42.51 November 15: Rs 41.25
