MADURAI, DEC.7. The Madurai District Ex-Servicemen Welfare has exceeded the target under the `Flag Day' collection during 2003 and the Government has fixed a target of Rs.25,40,000 to be raised this year, the Collector, D. Raajendiran, has said. Inaugurating the `Flag Day' collections at the Collectorate here today, Mr. Raajendiran said the welfare was able to raise Rs.32,25,896 exceeding the target of Rs.24,40,000 last year. He lauded Government employees, bankers and members of the public for helping the administration exceed the target. Meanwhile, government welfare assistance amounting to Rs.30 lakhs was disbursed to 990 ex-servicemen in the district between December 1, 2003 and November-end this year, he said. Mr. Raajendiran called upon the officials and the members of the public to help achieve this year's target. He gave was Rs.1,40,000 under the marriage assistance, education assistance, self-employment assistance, and bank loans, for 63 persons on the occasion. The Group Commander of the National Cadet Corps, R. Balasundaram, the Personal Assistant to Collector (General), Anbazhagan, the Public Relations Officer, S. Saravanan, the lead bank manger, S. Vanangamudy, and the Assistant Director of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Capt. (Retd.), M. Madavan, were among those present during the disbursement of assistance. Earlier, a two minutes' silence was observed as a mark of respect to Jaya Rajavelan of Rashtriya Rifles, who died in a landmine blast in Kashmir on December 4.
