COIMBATORE, DEC. 7 . To enable urban poverty alleviation, women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) within Corporation limits will soon see themselves sharing the work of the civic body. Following Government orders, the Corporation has decided to hand over some of its tasks such as solid waste management, maintenance of bus stands and vegetable shandies, road cleaning and water meter reading to SHGs. Interested SHGs and those groups set up under the Swarnajayanthi Swarozgar Yogana can register their names with the Corporation Health office (Ph: 2395156) before December 10. "The women can involve themselves in door-to-door collection of garbage, segregation and vermiculture, adding to their earnings," the Commissioner, Anil Meshram, said. Offices in the Women's Development Corporation and Nehru Yuva Kendras will monitor the performance of these SHGs. The SHGs in the district have engaged themselves in a range of vocations, including production of lemon grass oil, coir making, paper cup making and running a timber depot.
