COIMBATORE, DEC. 7. The Saravanampatty police have arrested a carpenter, Arumugam, residing at Gandhimanagar on charges of stabbing George (27) of Moore Market in Ganapathy area to death on Monday night. According to the police, George along with Sundaram had gone to the house of Arumugam around midnight. In a duel that ensued, Arumugam is said to have stabbed George to death in self-defence as well as to protect his wife Nageshwari, as the duo attempted to misbehave with her in an inebriated condition. On seeing his associate being stabbed, Sundaram fled. The police arrested Arumugam within a few hours of the incident. George died enroute to the hospital.
Prisoner dies
The former secretary of a co-operative bank and an undertrial in a case relating to a scam in a co-operative bank, Krishnan (55) of Kotagiri in the Nilgiris, today died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). According to prison officials, Krishnan was admitted to the CMCH following cardiac arrest. The relatives of Krishnan who had come to take him on bail, pointed out that he had no history of cardiac ailments and said timely medical aid could have saved him. An RDO inquiry is under way.
Injured
A convict prisoner, Sathyanarayanan (26), at the Coimbatore Central Prison sustained a head injury in a fight with a group of three Hindu activist prisoners. He was rushed to the CMCH and his condition was said to be stable.
