This Day That Age
The Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai, has warned the U.S. that it "must take upon itself all the grave consequences" if it does not withdraw its armed forces from Formosa and the Nationalist-held islands. He condemned the recent U.S. - Chinese Nationalist Defence Treaty as "a grave war-like provocation against the Republic of China," the New China News Agency reported on December 8. Mr. Chou En-lai said: "Formosa is China's territory and Chiang Kai-shek is the public enemy of the people. By this treaty the U.S. Government attempts to legalise its armed seizure of China's territory of Taiwan (Formosa) and with Taiwan as a base to extend its aggression against China and prepare for a new war. To liberate Taiwan and liquidate the Chiang Kai-shek clique is a matter which falls entirely within the scope of China's sovereignty and no interference by any foreign country will be tolerated. Threats of war cannot shake the determination of the Chinese people to liberate Taiwan."
