Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the articles, "Has America spoken?"(Magazine, Dec. 5), and "Politicians with God on their side" (Dec. 7). Both have pointed out that George W. Bush, during the run-up to the elections, repeatedly invoked the name of God to justify the attack on Iraq and Afghanistan. He no doubt succeeded in brainwashing the American electorate. But those who voted Mr. Bush to power need to remember that all religions advocate peace and compassion and that Islam is no different. Mr. Bush has been given the presidency of the U.S. alone and he needs to get his priorities right if he hopes to succeed over the next four years in office.
N. Sivaraman,
* * * Sir, "Politicians with God on their side" is relevant in the context of the recent proclamation of L.K. Advani that "the BJP is the chosen instrument of the divine" to solve the country's problems. The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Kalyan Singh, had also invoked the name of God to justify his failure to prevent the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
A.K. Dasgupta,
