Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article, `The Sankaracharya and the law' (Open Page, Dec. 7), by Ravindra Varma is superb. After reading this, I am sure many groups/organisations/parties will refrain from raising their voices in support of the Kanchi Sankracharya, Shri Jayendra Saraswathi, who is in prison. When all of us believe that "all are equal before the law" we should have the patience to wait for the trial to be over.
R. Ramanan,
* * * Sir, V. Jayanth's analysis, "Acharya's arrest: lack of crisis management' (Dec. 5) was an account of the ground realities. The law should be allowed to take its course but is it not the Mutt's duty to present its case?
Bhama Bhaskaran,
* * * Sir, The full-page advertisement taken out by the Kanchi Mutt appears to be an attempt to take advantage of the media attention on the Sankaracharya's arrest and make monetary gain out of it. The summary of bank accounts that hides the number of accounts, balance and details of a huge number of cheques issued in-between only weakens the case of the Sankara Mutt.
B. Biswal,
* * * Sir, If nothing is wrong with the affairs of the Mutt, what was the need for such costly advertisements in prominent dailies?
S. Raman,
* * * Sir, How does it matter whether the Kanchi Mutt was established by the Adi Sankara or whether it is 2,500 years old, and so on? It is an undisputed fact that it has been passing on the intellectual philosophy of Adi Sankara all these years.
T. Santhanam,
* * * Sir, It is unfortunate that the Kanchi Mutt is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Once adorned by the illustrious Paramacharya, it now stands discredited. Maybe, it will take decades, if not centuries, to regain past glory.
P.K. Varadarajan,
