TIRUPATI. Dec. 8. The much-awaited pumping of the Telugu Ganga water to Tirumala hills commenced on Wednesday, signalling the implementation of an MoU reached between the TTD and the Tirupati Municipality. The municipality is committed to supply 15 lakh gallons of water daily to the TTD reciprocating the financial help it had received for the execution of the Kalyani Dam and for the more recent Kailasagiri reservoir. The water under the scheme is first diverted to the 3000 kl sump situated at SVRR Hospital from the municipal pumping station in its park on the bypass road. A 215 hp capacity motor is being used for the pumping. From here the water will be pumped into the TTD's underground reservoir built a few years ago to pump up water to Tirumala situated about 3200 ft above MSL in a three-stage operation. The reservoir was built about five years ago on a warfooting by a consortium of companies to help Tirumala, which was in the grip of an acute water scarcity at that time. The Tirupati Municipal Commissioner, B. Rami Reddy formally launched the supply of Telugu Ganga water to Tirumala by switching on the motor at the Park pumping station.
