CPI(M) activists, including the aged and the infirm taking out a padayatra in Tirupati on Wednesday in a run-up to the three-day district party convention.
TIRUPATI. Dec. 8. The Chittoor district unit of the CPI(M) which is preparing in a big way for its three-day convention here from December 12 on Wednesday lashed out at its senior partner in the UPA alliance for allegedly going back on its poll promises. "It is also treading the same anti-people path as the Telugu Desam Party and would meet with the same fate," the district secretary, K. Murali, said. Speaking after releasing the party's `propaganda' audio-cassette in the run-up to the 8th convention, he cited the example of not only the removal of the mandal agricultural extension officers but also the merciless lathicharge on them in Hyderabad on Wednesday when they were holding a peaceful demonstration.
Padayatras
To mobilise people for the convention, the party leaders have been on a padayatras through the wards of the town and are addressing meetings at street corners. The convention, held once in three years, would elect the new district body, party sources said. While a massive rally and public meeting would mark the beginning of the convention on 12th, the next two days would be devoted to the delegates' session to discuss organisational matters and issues concerning the party's future agenda. Among the district leaders who participated in the programmes were K. Kumar Reddy, V. Gangaraju, and R. Rajeswari.
Chalo Collectorate
The CITU, which heads the Andhra Pradesh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union today gave a `Chalo Collectorate' call for December 16. The Anganwadi Union's State Vice-President said the Chief Minister, Rajasekhar Reddy, who had earlier promised to pay them a higher salary their Tamil Nadu counterparts, has announced a hike of a mere Rs. 100 against the Rs. 1000 by Tamil Nadu.
