Abdullah envisions East Asia Community

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE, DEC. 8. The Malaysian Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, has outlined a blueprint for an "East Asia Community," inclusive of China and Japan besides the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), in due course.

At a meeting of the East Asia Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Abdullah said the first-ever East Asia Summit, proposed to be held at Putrajaya (Malaysia) next year, should help `drive' the process.

He said a free-trade area, monetary and financial cooperation, consensus on cooperation, an agreement on a regional transportation and communications network and declaration of human rights and obligations should form the basis of the community.
