United Nations: Buoyed by strong support from member-nations including four of the five Security Council members, the U.N. Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has rejected the demand of some American lawmakers to resign in view of allegations of corruption in the oil-for-food programme. Mr. Annan's second term ends on December 31, 2006 and indications from officials and diplomats were that he would complete his tenure. Asked if he planned to resign, he replied, ``I have quite a lot of work to do and I am carrying on with my work. We have a major agenda next year, and the year ahead, trying to reform this organisation. So we will carry on.'' Washington's closest ally Britain, Russia, France, Germany, the 54-member African group and the 25-member European Union have expressed their backing for him. PTI
