Unions in show of support for mill workers, farmers

PONDICHERRY, DEC. 8. Leaders and volunteers of party-sponsored trade unions today held a demonstration in Bharathi Park, near the Assembly premises here, to demand protection for workers and proper payment to sugar cane farmers attached to privately run sugar mills at Ariyur.

Theni C. Jayakumar, Member of the Legislative Assembly and leader of the Pondicherry unit of the Tamil Maanila Congress, addressed the demonstrators.

Party leaders and trade union activists appealed to the Government to relieve the farmers and the mill workers of their hardship caused by the "indifferent stand" of the mills' management over the last two years.
