Ex-TTD official's house searched

TIRUMALA: The TTD security and vigilance sleuths, along with revenue and police officials, today conducted a `search' at the official residence of the former TTD Garden Superintendent, P.T. Srinivas, and seized certain CDs, photo albums and other documents relating to the department.

According to the T.T.D. Chief Security Officer, Mr. Balakrishna, the search was conducted on the charge that Mr. Srinivas did not hand over certain records pertaining to the department at the time when he was relieved from the post.

Norway approves of 35-cr. aid

HYDERABAD: Norway has approved Rs. 35-crore assistance to various Indo-Norwegian projects. The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here will be allotted a project for enhancing the secondary recovery of oil from Indian oil wells. To be taken up at a cost of Rs.1.8 crores, the project is to be launched in February next year by a Norwegian Minister in Delhi.

This was announced here on Wednesday by V.P. Dimri, NGRI Director, on the sidelines of an international conference on "Soil and groundwater contamination: risk assessment and remedial measures" at the institute.

P.L.Narayana, chief, Indo-Norwegian Cooperation Programme, stated that 41 projects under the programme being implemented since 1990 had been approved so far in various fields.

Sweetlime plants destroyed

ANANTAPUR: As many as 600 sweetlime plants were chopped by unidentified persons at Maddipalli village in Putlur mandal of the district in the early hours of today. The plants were two-and-half months old.

According to the police, the plants belonged to Ramachandra Reddy of the village. The farmer found the plants mowed down when he visited the fields in the morning. He had no enmity or rivalry. The Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, the Additional SP, K. Venkateswarlu, visited the village.

Police official promoted

HYDERABAD: E. Damodar has been posted as Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) in the office of the Director-General of Police, Hyderabad, a press release said.

Five landmines unearthed

ONGOLE: The police detected five landmines, allegedly planted by CPI (Maoist), near Veerabhadrapuram village in Yerragondapalem mandal of Prakasam district today. According to the Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Chandra Laddha, a special police team, which was on a routine route check, detected landmines at 4.30 p.m. While two landmines were detected under a culvert near Veerabhadrapuram, three were found under a chapta half-a-km away.

The landmines were packed with 10 kg of gelatine sticks each.

Medical reps' rally on Dec. 13

HYDERABAD: Medical and sales representatives from different parts of the country working in State-based companies will take out a rally here on December 13 to press their demands. Their demands include implementation of laws pertaining to their profession, working hours and punishment to employers for violating acts. The rally will culminate in a public meeting. The Labour Minister, G. Vinod, several MPs and MLAs will address the participants, according to A. Nageswara Rao, organising secretary, Federation of Medical and Sales Representatives'Association of India.

TTD to suspend some rituals

TIRUMALA: The `Vaikunta Ekadasi' and `Vaikunta Dwadasi' festivals will be celebrated at the temple of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala, on December 22nd and 23rd respectively.

In view of the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival, the TTD management will dispensed with all arjitha sevas like Thomala, Archana, Archana-anantara darshan, Sahasra Kalasabhishekam, Kalyanotsavam, Brahmotsavam, Unjal Seva and Vasanthotsavam. However, Sahasra Deepalankara sevawill be performed. On `Vaikunta Dwadasi', the temple management will suspend pre-dawn rituals like Thomala and Archana. There will be no change with regard to other arjitha sevas which will be performed as usual.

Ghat road mishap: one killed

TIRUMALA: A woman was killed and five injured, all belonging to a single family, when the driver of the jeep in which they were travelling, lost control while negotiating a sharp curve on the ghat road and capsized after hitting the railings this morning.

According to Tirumala traffic Sub-Inspector, K.V. Surendra Naidu, all 13 passengers were natives of Pune, Maharastra, and were proceeding to Tirupati after the darshan of the Lord.The deceased was identified as P. Jayamala Dhalubhanjan (50). All the injured were immediately rushed down to the Government-run SVRR Hospital, Tirupati.

Rain forecast in some places

Hyderabad: A trough was present along the South Andhra Coast on Wednesday. Isolated rain is likely in Nellore and Chittoor districts on Thursday under its influence, according to a forecast.

Minimum temperatures rose at many places in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema but they changed little in Telangana. The lowest night temperature for the day was recorded by Medak at 11 degree Celsius. Weather was mainly dry in the State.

Mahila Morcha plans stir

ADILABAD: The district unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha has threatened to stage a dharna if the "discrepancies in the property tax demand notices served by the Adilabad Municipality" are not rectified in three days.

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday, the Morcha president, Nivedita Vaze, alleged that because of the discrepancies, many people were being made to pay more tax.

Citing an instance, she said though the Government gave concession on the penal interest on property tax arrears, it was being included in many cases.

Course in French

WARANGAL: The Students' Welfare Centre, Kakatiya University, proposes to offer free introductory course in French from December 15.

According to the centre director, K. Katyayani, classes will be held between 6 p.m. and 7 pm. for 20 days. Interested students may enrol their names before December 15.

TRS 'praja garjana'

KARIMNAGAR: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) district unit has decided to mobilise 65,000 people for the `praja garjana' being organised by the party at Parade grounds in Secunderabad on December 11.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the TRS district president, C. Satyanarayana Reddy, and the State leader, K. Baghya Reddy, said that the allies of the UPA Government, including the Congress party, would participate in the meeting.

Selected for netball tourney

KARIMNAGAR: V. Bhagat Reddy, an eighth class student of Gayathri Vidyalayam, has been selected for the national netball competitions during the State-level under-17 meet held in Khammam between December 2 and 4, according to a press release.

B. Saikrishna, a 10th class student of the school, secured bronze medal in the under-19 sub-juniors boxing competitions held in Visakhapatnam recently, the release added.

IMA conference

WARANGAL: The Warangal branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) proposes to host the 46th State conference here on December 11 and 12 at Kakatiya Medical College auditorium.

According to organising secretary, P. Vijaychander Reddy, some 1,000 delegates were likely to take part in the deliberations. K. Prameela would assume charge as the branch's new president.

The conference is expected to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Takes charge

WARANGAL: V.P. Singh has taken over as Marketing Director of Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO).

A Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Mr. Singh commenced his career as plant scientist at the IIT and also worked with the IFFCO before joining the KRIBHCO in 1987 as State Marketing Manager.

Motel owner fined

TIRUPATI: A private motel owner had to pay a hefty penalty of Rs. 1.78 lakhs and a compounding fee of Rs. 22,000 for alleged illicit drawal of power by the hotel's water motor by hooking a wire to the power line. The Inspector of Police, Vigilance and APTS Station, Tirupati, S.M. Khaleel registered a case following a raid conducted by the ADE on the motel located near Bangarupalem on the Bangalore national highway.

Bags research projects

TIRUPATI: The Central Department of Science and Technology (DST) has sanctioned a Rs. 23.79 lakh-research project to V. Padmavathi, an associate professor of chemistry at SV University on "Synthesis of a new class of bis five membered heterocycles of biological significance." The UGC has also sanctioned a Rs.7.33 lakh-project to her for "A study on novel bis heterocycles of biological importance."

New equipment inaugurated

MADANAPALLE: The Medical Superintendent of the Government Hospital, Sanjeeva Rajyudu, has inaugurated the audiometer and speech trainer at the Lakshminarayana Deaf School being run by the Velugu voluntary organisation. Speaking at a function organised on the occasion, the MEO, P. Chandrasekhar, to cooperate with the school on educational issues and Ramesh Kumar Reddy, physiotherapist promised to help in his field of expertise.

Man dies in mishap

Nellore: A man has been fatally knocked down by an unidentified vehicle, on the national highway near Akkampet of Tada mandal. The victim has been identified as Munaswamy (65) the village chief of Graddagunta. The Tada police are investigating.

Survey on co-op societies

Nellore: A survey relating to the proper working and development of primary co-operative societies will be held under the auspices of the Integrated Co-operative Development Project. An amount of Rs. 8 crores had been allotted for farmers in the district. The money will be used to help build godowns through which fertilisers and pesticides will be distributed. New godowns will also come up at Vakadu mandal.

Akshara Bharati training

Nellore: A two-day cluster-level training for Akshara Bharati programme in Manubolu mandal will begin on Thursday. Training will be held from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All participants will receive teaching material. There are about 250 Akshara Bharati centres in the mandal. In Kota, 350 centres will start functioning from December 14 and volunteers will be trained on December 9 and 10.

Ryots lay siege to MRO office

NELLORE: Ayacutdars of Mallam laid siege on the mandal revenue office of Chittamuru, on Tuesday, demanding release of adequate irrigation water. They pointed that farmers belonging to 16 villages were cultivating the fields, but water was not reaching the Tirumuru tank. Also there were complaints that water was being misused by some of the farmers in nearby areas.

Amaron retail centre opened

NELLORE: Amaron `Pitshop,' a state-of-the art retail centre for automotive batteries, was opened at Nellore, on Wednesday by its Chief Executive, Aftermarket division, G. Indeevar. The batteries are from Amara Raja group of Tirupati -- an automotive battery major.

Apart from making available various kinds of batteries to different sectors, the `Pitshop' will also function as a collection centre for used batteries. The company's products are exported to 15 countries in South-East Asia.
