Blaming Sonia a diversionary tactic: Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 8. Joining issue with the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Uma Bharti, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, today said she was unnecessarily dragging Hinduism into the issue of the arrest of the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, in a murder case.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, made it clear that her Government was left with no option other than arresting the Acharya. Many BJP leaders, including a former Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, also said the Tamil Nadu Government arrested the Acharya. Then why was Ms. Bharti trying to implicate the Centre in the arrest, Mr. Karunanidhi wondered.

Ms. Bharti was concerned neither about the murdered person nor the Acharya. She was more concerned that the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had not commented on the issue, said Mr. Karunanidhi.

Recalling that the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had written to the Chief Minister, saying the Acharya should be treated with the dignity he deserved, Mr. Karunanidhi asked what more did Ms. Bharti expect of the Centre and Ms. Gandhi. Trying to blame Ms. Gandhi was merely an attempt at diverting the attention of the people, he said.
