DUSU is active again

The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) seems to have woken up from a deep slumber. And it has taken them nothing less than their national leader Sonia Gandhi's birthday to get the team's act together. Over three months after taking office, DUSU is finally ready with a "major" programme.

On the eve of World Anti-slavery Day and the occasion of Sonia Gandhi's birthday, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI)-led DUSU will be launching a job guaranteed computer education programme and a weeklong self-defence workshop for girls studying in eight Delhi University colleges on Thursday.

Being organised in association with the Delhi Slum Dwellers' Federation, the computer programme is aimed at economically backward students who need financial help. According to DUSU members, 50 students would be selected for the programme and given training in computers and a course in English-speaking.

The self-defence workshop, on the other hand, will be held till December 14 at Miranda House, Laxmibai College, Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Vivekandand College, Bharti College, Sri Venkateswara College, Ram Lal Anand and Syama Prasad College.

Colleges were perhaps never this serious about career counselling before. Delhi University's Indraprastha College for Women organised a one-day career fair, "Futurequest04'', on Wednesday to help guide students choose the right career after their graduation.

Perhaps the first time that a college has taken the initiative to hold a career fair of such a large proportion, major institutions like the British Council, USEFI, Canadian Education Centre, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Embassy of Ireland, the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force as well as the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and the National Institute of Fashion Technology are involved.

Also participating are the Ashok Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (Spastic Society), Pearl Academy of Fashion, Infinity Business School, Kuoni Academy of Travel, Jewellery Design and Technology Institute, YWCA Women's Training Institute, Imago Acting school, CARING, Wipro and Rai University.

A day after the NSUI lashed out at the Left bastion in JNU for defeating a resolution condemning China for showing Arunachal Pradesh as its territory, the Students' Federation of India and the All India Students' Federation are up in arms.

The SFI-AISF combine said the NSUI had told only half the truth by not mentioning another resolution on Arunachal Pradesh that was passed. This particular resolution while hailing the comprehensive border talks between India and China urged both Governments to respect each other's sovereignty and integrity.

"It also asked both the Governments to maintain peace at the borders and resolve all contentious issues through dialogue. The resolution also appeals to isolate xenophobic onion on both sides which have the potential to foil the hard attempts of resolving border dispute through the process of dialogue between the special task force set by the Government,'' a statement issued by the combine said.

NIIT has added yet another feather to its cap. Business intelligence major International Data Corporation (IDC) has named NIIT as the largest Asia-based IT training provider, making it the only IT trainer from the region to make it to the top IT trainers listing in the world.

Adding its name to a list that contains IT training leaders such as Cisco, Dell, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle SAP and Sun, the IDC report said that "NIIT is well positioned to grow globally as it accommodates growing demand for IT training as well as customer demand for custom development of blended learning programs''. The inclusion is based on NIIT's growth in the calendar 2003, deriving global system-wide revenues of USD 111 million from IT training.
