By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 8. There is paucity of veterinary doctors in the State and only 138 of the 500 vacancies were filled, the Assembly was informed on Wednesday.

Replying to supplementaries during question hour, the Minister for Animal Husbandry, G. Surya Rao, said 150 veterinary graduates expected to pass out in February/March 2005 would be absorbed immediately to meet the shortage.

Answering the main question by A. Govind Naik (TRS), he said five of the 32 vacant posts of veterinary assistant surgeons in Adilabad district were filled recently. The remaining would be filled in due course. An amount of Rs. 7 lakhs was released to the district for purchasing medicines in the first half of 2004-05.

Juvenile welfare boards

The Tourism Minister, J. Geetha Reddy, told V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy (Congress) that the Government had constituted juvenile welfare boards and child welfare committees. Denying that children in the juvenile homes were ill-treated, she said there was only a `rare' instance of sodomy at a home in Saidabad. The superintendent and the male nurse were suspended. The decision on handing over children who completed their terms to parents would be taken in a week.

Replying to another question by T. Venkata Rao (Cong), the Revenue Minister, D. Prasada Rao, said that land allotted to four publications would be revoked if they violated the conditions.

Answering a question on allotment of land to a publishing company in Banjara Hills, he said the deed of allotment was executed with only DOT Publishers on December 12, 1998, on the condition that the land would be used for construction of a printing press, administrative offices, a rest house and that the building would be constructed within one year from the date of deed of allotment. The firm had violated the conditions for which show-cause notice was issued.

He said that the deed of allotment was yet to be executed with M/s Balaji Administrative Service Pvt Ltd., M/s Maharshi Publishers Pvt. Ltd., and M/s Creative Industries Pvt. Ltd.

Allotment questioned

Answering a supplementary by P. Janardhan Reddy (Congress) on how land was allotted to `Udayam,' `Andhra Patrika' and `Guardian' newspapers that were closed, he said the allotment was done in 1994 but cancelled subsequently. The Government had to give land after the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order.
