Temperature

TIRUCHI, DEC. 8. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 28.3 degree Celsius and a minimum of 21.3 degree Celsius.

Youth dies

in accident

An 18-year-old youth died after the share autorickshaw in which he was travelling overturned near Aristo roundtana here today. The police gave the name of the deceased as Dayanidhi. There were six other passengers in the vehicle.

Police sources here said the vehicle was going to Central bus stand from Edamalaipatti Pudur when it suddenly overturned. Mr. Dayanidi who fell down from the vehicle was brought dead to the hospital. The Traffic Investigation (South) Unit is investigating the case.

Salesperson suspended

P. Bhuvaneswari, salesperson of a fair price shop at Malayappa Nagar, has been placed under suspension for irregularity in selling the rice. She was suspended following a direction from the Collector, V. Pandian, an official release issued here today said.

Jewellery

stolen

Jewellery weighing a little over three sovereigns was allegedly stolen from a house at Uttathur here on Tuesday when the inmates were away. Police sources here said Sankaran, ex-serviceman, and his wife went to their field after locking the house.

When they returned, they found the lock broken and the jewellery missing from the almirah. The Siruganur police have registered a case and are on the look out for the accused.

Unidentified body found

The body of a woman, aged around 50, was found at Garuda Mandapam in Srirangam here today. The identity of the deceased is not known, police sources here said. The body has been sent to Srirangam Government Hospital. The Srirangam police are investigating.

2 injured in wall collapse

Two coolies, including a woman, sustained minor injuries when the sidewall of a cycle shop on Town Station Road suddenly collapsed while they were digging nearby.

Police sources said one of the labourers, Rangaraj (45), of Valmalpalayam near Mannachanallur was admitted to the government hospital for treatment. Another labourer, Vijalakshmi (28), of Thiruverumbur was treated as an outpatient.

Cases booked

The police registered as many as 1,921 cases against the road users for violation of traffic norms during November.

On the direction of the City Police Commissioner, T. P. Sundaramoorthy, the police swung into action and booked the cases for licence-less driving, using mobile phones while driving, over-speeding, using of air-horns, crossing markings at the automatic traffic signals, parking vehicles on no-parking areas, automen plying their vehicles without wearing uniforms, riding and driving vehicles consuming liquor etc. A spot fine to the tune of Rs. 1.43 lakhs was collected from them.

The release warned those who violated traffic norms with stringent action.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 98.59 feet today. The inflow was 2,968 cusecs and the discharge 11,348 cusecs.
