Exhibitors' forum will not go against accord: Odugoudar

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, DEC. 8. Amid unconfirmed reports that some exhibitors have drawn up plans to release new non-Kannada films on Friday, the Karnataka Chalanachitra Pradashkara Mahamandala has said that it will adhere to the accord on the three-week moratorium on non-Kannada films.

The president of the mahamandala, R.R. Odugoudar, told The Hindu on Wednesday that he had met the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and had apprised him of the mahamandala's stand in the matter. "There is no question of the mahamandala going against the accord," he added.

The Government was convinced that the mahamandala was committed to the accord, he said and added that the Government knew that the mahamandala was not responsible for the recent unsavoury developments.

It was also aware of the condition that the mahamandala would observe the three-week moratorium for two months and that it would approach the Government if there were any hitches, he said.

Mr. Siddaramaiah had given consent to hold an exclusive meeting with the executive committee members of the mahamandala either on Monday or Tuesday, Mr. Odugoudar said.

Suggestions

Meanwhile, sources in the film industry said the Government had sought clarifications and suggestions on several issues related to the film industry, including policy matters, from the departments concerned.

There was a suggestion that the time was ripe to consider measures to bring the film industry under the Department of Industries and Commerce.

There was also a feeling that divesting the Department of Information and Publicity of the charge of the film industry would be beneficial to the Government and the film industry.

The sources said this might help the Government streamline its policy on films and avoid controversies and alleged irregularities involving annual awards, subsidy and other subsidiary issues.

And, the film industry would officially get the status of an industry and other benefits, the sources added.
