dated December 10, 1954: Marriage age

The age of marriage under the Hindu Marriage and Divorce Bill is likely to be retained at 18 years for boys and 15 for girls, instead of 21 and 16 respectively, recommended by the Joint Select Committee, it is learnt. This follows a discussion on the Bill in the Congress Parliamentary Party on December 9. The consensus of opinion at the meeting was that the age should be retained at 18 and 15. While the parties marrying in contravention of this provision will be punishable as proposed in the Bill, it was felt that under-age marriages should not be voided or made voidable. But a girl can ask for divorce on the ground that she was married when she was under-aged.
