Surrender totally to Him

Chennai, Dec, 10. Faith in God can fetch a person abundant mental happiness. One of the important requirements of Hinduism is steadfast belief. If a person totally relies on God, there is bound to be peace within as the Lord will respond to his prayers. If the Supreme Being decides to protect a devotee no one can stop Him extending it and the person need not go about seeking help from other sources. Likewise, if God decides that a person deserves no support due to grave sins committed it will be futile for him to approach others - the Lord alone has the power and if one obeys spiritual injunctions he will receive the fruits and reach the Lord at the end of his life's journey. As Vedanta Desikan exclaimed, "If you decide to protect me I need not go to anybody."

Total surrender at His feet will remove all difficulties, said Sri. M.R.Nagasubramaniam in his discourse. There may be occasions when due to severity of problems a man may be pushed to a point of desperation; even then he should continue to count on God's guidance and grace. The Ramayana provides clear proof of the above, laying stress on hope. Even the most formidable task can be surmounted by divine grace. Nothing exemplifies this better than the daring exploits of Anjaneya when he embarked on his search mission. In the Ashoka forest Sita sat brooding and sinking into despondency over her plight. In abject misery she thought the only course open to her was to end her life, even as she wondered if her grievous situation was a result of past misdeeds in her earlier birth, and from misery to anguish she rued the wise saying that death cannot come before the due hour as preordained. Her long lament notwithstanding her mind was wholly given to Rama and thus even as she resolved to hang herself from the branches of a huge tree there were portents of good omen indicating an end to all her sorrows. The incredible turn of events, the auspicious signs presaged imminent good fortune and were instrumental in restoring Sita's self-confidence. Sensing the conflict in her mind, Anjaneya revealed his identity and won her confidence with judicious words, regaling Rama 's noble qualities. This saved her from the jaws of death and assured her she will be freed soon. The various occurrences in the epic have been explained by veteran commentators. Anjaneya sat on top of a tree the branch of which Sita had also chosen to end her life. The law of virtue enabled this meeting to take place making Anjaneya change Sita's decision.
