By V. S. Sambandan
COLOMBO, DEC. 9. Sri Lanka's United National Party (UNP), said today that it would launch national and international campaigns against the sentencing of its MP and former Minister, S. B. Dissanayake, who was jailed for contempt of court on Tuesday. The UNP's campaign plans include an appeal for judicial review by the Supreme Court, island-wide street marches and demonstrations.
Contempt of court
The Sri Lankan Supreme Court held that Mr. Dissanayake's comments at a public meeting on November 3, 2003, constituted contempt of court. In his speech, made when the UNP was in power, Mr. Dissanayake had referred to a move by the President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, to seek the Supreme Court's opinion on taking over the Defence Ministry. The Supreme Court pointed out that Mr. Dissanayake had been reprimanded for a similar offence a few years ago, when he was a Minister in the previous Peoples' Alliance Government headed by Ms. Kumaratunga. Tuesday's unanimous judgment of a five-member Supreme Court Bench, read out by the Chief Justice, Sarath N. Silva, quoted Mr. Dissanayake as saying: "The UNP Government does not accept Chandrika sending it [the issue of taking over the Defence Ministry] to the Supreme Court. Whatever the dogs' decision (balu thindu), we will not accept. "Therefore, the Defence Ministry should be with us. Chandrika cannot change that. If she wants to, she can have an election. If there is an election, we will win 113 seats, therefore, we say Chandrika cannot go to court. We will not accept the decision of the court. That is our right."
