CPI(M) seeks distribution of fresh ration cards

PONDICHERRY, DEC. 9. The Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the administration to issue updated and fresh ration cards immediately as enumeration has already been completed relating to the families. A resolution adopted in this regard at the recent 18th conference of the party's regional unit here pointed out that the validity of the earlier cards had lapsed in January and, hence, fresh cards were necessary.

Civic polls

Distributing copies of the resolutions adopted at the conference at a press meet here today, the new secretary of the CPI (M)'s Pondicherry unit, V. Perumal, said the Government was also urged to initiate steps to hold immediately elections to civic bodies.

The last poll was held in December 1968 and lack of elected bodies all these years had been causing hindrance to implementing various schemes to ameliorate the amenities.

Mr. Perumal said the conference also called upon the Centre to include Pondicherry under the rural employment guarantee scheme ensuring a job for 100 days.

There should be no fixation of house and property taxes by municipal authorities till the elected bodies were installed in office.

T. Murugan, member of the party's executive committee, said the State Women's Commission should be reconstituted as there should be opportunities for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to become members of the commission.

He said the conference also called for the establishment of a medical college by the State Government. Steps should be taken by the administration to ensure that no part of the Union Territory faced law and order problem.
