Security tightened for zilla panchayat meeting

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, DEC. 9. The Congress will table a no-confidence motion against the zilla panchayat president, G.T. Indira, and the vice-president, T.D Khande Rao, on Friday.

The chief executive officer (CEO), F.R. Jaamdar, has convened a special meeting after one-third of the members requested him to do so in order to table the no-confidence motion.

The meeting has been convened at Hoysala Hall at 12.30 p.m. Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Jaamdar said that arrangements had been made to conduct the special meeting in view of the disturbances that occurred during the election to the posts of president and vice-president on November 17, 2003.

He said that he had sought police protection and security would be tightened in and around the zilla panchayat building.

He had directed authorities of the Public Works Department to barricade the area to stop the supporters of the members from entering the building. Only elected representatives would be allowed inside the hall.

Mr. Jaamdar said that for the quorum, 50 per cent of the members had to be present at the meeting.

The members were expected to present their identity cards to gain entry into the hall and would also be identified by the zilla panchayat staff.

Mr. Jaamdar said that according to the provisions of the Panchayat Raj Act, the members would chose one from among themselves to preside over the meeting, as the motion was against the president and the vice-president.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Minister for Public Works and district in-charge, H.D. Revanna, charged that the Congress members were tabling the no-confidence motion just to hinder the development works that were being taken up in the district.
