DHARWAD, DEC. 9. P.S. Vastrad, Commissioner of Public Instruction, Belgaum Division, has asked the officials of the Education Department to ensure that all children of school-going age who were left out of the Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan (SSA) scheme, are admitted to school by the end of the year. Mr. Vastrad was inaugurating a two-day divisional education conference, which began here on Friday. Mr. Vastrad said Bijapur and Bagalkot districts had a large number of dropouts. Under SSA, construction of 1,284 classrooms at a cost of Rs. 14.14 crores had been taken up as against the annual target of constructing 1,516 classrooms in the division. In addition, 142 classrooms had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.19 crores. Mr. Vastrad said Belgaum Division had 11,800 government, aided and private primary schools in which 19.35 lakh children were studying. The number of teachers working in the area was 49,030 and there were 2,352 vacancies of teachers. The recruitment of 1,553 teachers was on, he said. Mr. Vastrad said there was no dearth of funds for the construction of classrooms. Under the Akshara Dasoha midday meal scheme, he said the kitchens would be constructed in 4,132 centres. Mr. Panali, Director of Urdu and Minority Languages, who was the chief guest, said Rs. 2.52 crores had been earmarked for the recruitment of Hindi teachers, He also wanted the district officials to furnish details of the vacancy of the Hindi teachers in the area. He said that nodal officers at the district and taluk levels should be appointed to supervise the work of conveying the importance of statistics and arrange for the collection and documentation of statistics. Jagannatharao, Director, Directorate of State Education Research and Training, said Karnataka had been a model for other States in different programmes. Tirumalarao, Joint Director of the directorate, Bangalore, spoke on the occasion. S. Usha, Joint Director, Directorate of State Education Research and Training, welcomed the gathering. Satyanarayana Reddy, Assistant Director of the directorate, proposed a vote of thanks.
