Iranian film sweeps awards

PANAJI, DEC. 9 . Iran's `Beautiful City' by Asghar Farhadi swept the Asian competition bagging two of the three awards, even as the 35th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) concluded on the joyous announcement that Goa would be hosting the festival next year.

`Beautiful City' not only bagged the Golden Peacock and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs for the Best Asian film, but also received the Special Jury award (Silver Peacock and a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakhs) for its main actor, Faramarz Gharibian.

Thailand's Ekachai Uekrongtham received the Silver Peacock and a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakhs for the Most Promising Asian Director for the film `Beautiful Boxer'. The jury also made a special mention of the Russian film `Old Women' by Gennady Siddorov for its portrayal of the last moments of senior citizens.

Speaking after giving away the awards, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, S. Jaipal Reddy, expressed confidence that the infrastructure facilities would be expanded by next year. He said Goa, which hosted the IFFI for the first time this year, would be remembered as a venue for exploration and expansion. — UNI
