Eight criminals arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 9. Eight persons, allegedly involved in many cases of snatching, vehicle-lifting, robbery and dacoity at various places in the Capital, have been arrested by the North-East Delhi police. Five stolen motorcycles, country-made revolvers, knives and jewellery worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs have been recovered from them.

According to the police, the Operation Cell of the North-East Delhi police had received a tip-off about a gang planning to commit a dacoity in Naveen Shahdara. Accordingly, a trap was laid in a park at Jheel in Seelampur. Around 7-15 p.m., nine persons riding four motorcycles assembled in the park. When the police team challenged them, the suspects opened fire. The police returned the fire. However, nobody was injured. Seven persons were arrested from the spot. They have been identified as Mohammad Ali Sher (27), Wasim Raja (26), Umesh (24), Chander Mohan (23), Ayaz (22), Jitender (21) and Jamal Hassan (27). Two persons who managed to escape were Rashid and Sahil. Subsequently, the receiver of the stolen property, Abdul Razzaq, was also arrested.

The police seized the four motorcycles from the spot and later recovered one more motorcycle from the accused. Apart from that, three country-made revolvers, a .32-bore pistol, three knives and several live and spent cartridges were recovered at the instance of the accused. Four gold rings, a diamond ring and one gold chain was also recovered.

Interrogation of the accused revealed that Ali had been released from Tihar Central Jail, where he was lodged in connection with various heinous cases, in February. After coming out of jail, Ali met Rashid through one Gulzar. Sahil, who too was released from Tihar jail, also joined Ali's gang. The gang mostly depended on informers for identifying their targets.
