THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 9. The State Government is seriously considering raising the retirement age of its employees to 58 years, according to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy. Inaugurating the delegates' session held here today in connection with the 19th State conference of the pro-Congress Kerala Gazetted Officers' Union (KGOU), he said the Government had an open mind in this regard. Referring to the demand of the Government employees for a pay revision, the Chief Minister said the financial constraints of the State were holding him back. He, had two rounds of discussions with the Minister for Finance and the president of the KPCC, on this issue. Kodikkunnil Suresh, general secretary of the KPCC, spoke. Jose Kurian Kattookkaran, State president of the KGOU, presided over the function and N. Aravindakshan, State general secretary of the union, welcomed the delegates. Vakkom Purushothaman, Minister for Finance, inaugurated the function at which members of the union who had attained the age of superannuation were given a warm send-off. Mr. Purushothaman said he was of the opinion that the retirement age of employees of the Government should be increased. He added that he had a positive mind on the question of appointing a pay commission as a prelude to revising the salaries of the employees of the Government.
