DPA leaders held at Villupuram

VILLUPURAM, DEC. 10. Police arrested the leaders of the Democratic Progressive Alliance, including the district secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, K. Ponmudi, MLA, when they defied the ban on taking out a procession today.

The DPA leaders decided to take out the procession from the Villupuram Government Hospital to the Taluk office where they planned to stage a demonstration in protest against the "anti-people policies" of the ruling All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam Government.

When the leaders and cadres, numbering about 1,500, attempted to take out the vehicles in a procession, they were stopped and detained by police.

Those who participated in the agitation included the municipal chairman, S.S. Panneerselvam, the district Congress committee president, Sampathkumar, the deputy general secretary of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Karunanidhi, and the district secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Masilamali.
