Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
Pondicherry Dec. 10. The AIADMK MLA, A. Anbalagan, has urged the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, to ensure reservation of wards for the Backward Classes (BCs) and the Most Backward Classes (MBCs) before finalising the civic poll schedule.(The last civic poll was held on December 16, 1968 under the French designed legislation. Despite introducing a new legislation in 1973 no poll had so far been held for civic bodies in the Union Territory) Mr. Anbalagan, who is also secretary of the State AIADMK unit, in a release said that despite his plea for the reservation, the ruling Congress and the Chief Minister were criticising him for obstructing preparation of poll-related arrangements. He said when the administration could bring in legislation relating to civic bodies there could be no difficulty to effect necessary amendments to ensure reservation of wards. The AIADMK was prepared to face the civic polls, but the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were not interested to revive grassroots-level democracy, he alleged.
