Four killed in road accident

CUDDAPAH: Four persons were killed on the spot when the autorickshaw they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a lorry on the outskirts of Mydukur on Friday.

The deceased were identified as Babaiah, Suman, Khader Basha and Babaiah, the Mydukur Urban Circle Inspector, Srinivasulu Reddy, said. Kondaiah, who was injured, was admitted to Proddatur Government Hospital. The lorry driver fled the scene after the accident.

Give relief first, says RTC union

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation Employees' Union has sought immediate steps to save the corporation. In a statement on Friday, the union expressed displeasure at the Government appointing a high-level committee instead of fulfilling its promise of announcing a package for the corporation.

Instead of waiting for the committee's report, the union sought immediate reduction in Motor Vehicle Tax on RTC buses, apart from a cut in Sales Tax on HSD oil. It also urged the Government to treat the Rs. 125 crores it was providing as grant instead of loan.

Two farmers end lives

NIZAMABAD: Crop failure and pressure allegedly exerted by banks and moneylenders forced two farmers to commit suicide in the district.

Ambar Singh (28) of Meghyanaik tanda in Ditchpally mandal consumed pesticide on Thursday afternoon. He was admitted to the district headquarters hospital here where he died on Friday while undergoing treatment.

A farmer, Kornapally Lingaiah (28), of Ahmedapur in Bodan mandal committed suicide by hanging himself. He was said to have borrowed Rs.1 lakh from banks and moneylenders but failed to repay the amount following crop failure.

Farmer injured in blast

TIRUPATI: A farmer was seriously injured in the forest fringe village of Bodevandlapalle in Yerravaripalem mandal on Friday. According to the police, the farmer, along with his brothers, was in his cane field to repair a submersible pump. They found a rusted tin in a shrub. The tin went off when the farmer, after failing to open it, hit it on the ground.

The Chittoor Superintendent of Police, V.V. Gopalakrishna, based on preliminary investigation, said that the tin containing a crude explosive could have been planted long time ago to tackle wild boar menace. The farmer was admitted to SVRR General Hospital here where his condition was said to be critical.

35 students taken ill

ADILABAD: Thirty-five students of the Upper Primary School, Arli-K, Talamadugu mandal, were admitted to the district headquarters hospital here as they fell sick after eating Jatropha seed. They ate the seed after taking lunch. They were taken to the hospital after developing nausea. Doctors said that the students were out of danger.

Case against teacher

ONGOLE: The police on Friday registered a case against a teacher for allegedly misbehaving with a girl student of Zilla Parishad High School at Kanaparthi village in Nagaluppalapadu mandal. The teacher was suspended after an inquiry.

Ganapati, a science teacher, allegedly tried to molest the girl studying in 10th class during the interval a few days ago. Even as she protested, her classmates alerted the headmaster, who rescued her. The girl consumed pesticide on Thursday in a bid to end her life and was admitted in a private nursing home here.

Telugu Academy results out

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Academy has announced the results of Telugu Parichay and Telugu Unnatha courses. The results are available on the websites -- www.teluguakademi.com/results and teluguacademy.com/results -- according to a press release. Students can contact the course coordinator, A. Pandaiah, for marks memo.

Lok Ayukta holidays

HYDERABAD: The Lok Ayukta and Upa-Lok Ayukta have announced their calendar of vacations and holidays for the year 2005. They will have vacation for Sankranti (January 10 to 12), summer (May 2 to June 10) and Dasara (October 13 to 14). They will also observe 20 general holidays. The court will work on three Saturdays (June 18, July 23 and September 24), according to a press release issued by G.V.N.R. Bhanumathi, in-charge Registrar.

FAPI for State-level panel

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Industries (FAPI) on Friday suggested to the Government to constitute a State-level committee to sort out financial problems of industrialists. Headed by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, it should meet once in three months to review the progress of industrialisation. In a memorandum submitted to Dr. Reddy, FAPI office-bearers, led by B.V. Rama Rao, president, mooted, among other things, a small units' revolving fund of Rs. 250 crores with a matching grant from the Centre.

Memorial unveiled

GUNTUR: The Communist Party of India (Maoist)-affiliated organisation, `Amara veerula bandhu mitrula committee', on Friday unveiled a memorial at Govindapuram in Machavaram mandal in memory of the three naxalites who were killed in an encounter at Chandrajpalem in Bellamkonda mandal.

The Krishna Patti dalam deputy commander, Gayam Adireddy, Eswar and Venkateswara Rao died in the encounter in 2001. The APCLC secretary, Chilaka Chandrasekhar, and the committee member, Uppu Krishna, were present on the occasion.

UNDP regional meet

HYDERABAD: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Administrative Staff College, is organising a two-day regional forum on `Revitalising Government in South Asia: public sector capacity and globalisation' here from December 13.

The forum aims at assisting governments to strengthen their public sector and governance capacities for achieving development goals and take advantage of the potential of globalisation.

Dry weather prevails in State

Hyderabad: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Friday. Hyderabad and Medak recorded the lowest night temperature of 11 degree Celsius. Minimum temperature fell at a few places in Rayalaseema, and they changed a little in Coastal Andhra and Telangana. The forecast for Saturday was that dry weather would continue in the State.

Medical camp

TIRUPATI: Aragonda Apollo Hospital will be conducting a free medical camp at Mahila pranganam, Tirupati for women trainees and children on December 12 from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Free treatment and medicines would be provided at the camp.

Aurobindo Society convention

TIRUPATI: The tenth annual State conference of Sri Aurobindo Society will be held at the TTD kalyana mandapam on Vellore Road in Chittoor on December 18 and 19. Pradeep Narang, chairman of the society's headquarters at Pondicherry, will hoist the "Mother's Flag" to mark the inauguration. V. Madhusudhana Reddy, Director, Nutrine Confectionary Private Limited, Chittoor, will be the chief guest. Experts will speak on various spiritual topics. The Tirupati branch of the society will hold an exhibition-cum-sale of books brought out by the society.

Andhra Bank branch opened

CUDDAPAH: The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, inaugurated an Andhra Bank branch at Rayachoti on Friday. He switched on the computer system in the totally computerised branch, the 14th in Cuddapah district and 70th in Tirupati zone. The General Manager of Andhra Bank, S. Muralidhar, inaugurated the strong room and gave away a passbook to a customer. The Chief Manager, D.V. Subba Raju, the DGM Tirupati zone, D. Jogiraju, managers, staff and customers participated.

Office-bearers elected

CUDDAPAH: The following persons have been elected office-bearers of the Andhra Pradesh Pensioners Forum district executive. K. Linga Reddy (chief advisor), P. Mankoji Rao (honorary president), S. Chadrayudu (district president). The other office-bearers are: M. Ramaswamy and R. Venkata Ramana (associate presidents), S. Ramakrishna Reddy (secretary), M. Sankaraiah (treasurer) and D. Devadasu (organising secretary). The meeting also elected five vice-presidents and six joint secretaries.

Counselling for children

NELLORE: Counselling for children identified to be suffering from cardiac problems will be conducted at Kalgiri primary health centre on December 14. About 31 children are to benefit from the counselling.

Free eye camp

MADANAPALLE: The Rotary Mid Town Club and Oasis and the District Blindness Control unit at Arogyavaram Medical Centre jointly organised a free eye camp here on Thursday. Over 175 patients were screened and 33 were selected for IOL operation, the Oasis president, T. Sreenivasa Gupta, said. The Rotary president, Prithvi Raj Anand was also present.

Talk on literary works

MADANAPALLE: C. Mrunalini, Assistant Professor, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad and Thallavajali Pathanjali Sastry, writer and poet from Rajahmundry, will speak on the literary works of late novelist and poet, Ratakonda Sudarsanam, in Madanapalle on Saturday. The talk will be held at the B.V. K. Mandapam, according to the Madanapalle Writers Association secretary, K. Balasubramanyam Pillai. Several personalities from the field of literature are expected to participate.

Raw deal for ryots flayed

NALGONDA: The president of the district Telugu Desam Party, B. Lingaiah Yadav, has criticised the Government for neglecting farmers' problems. Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he said though farmers spent more than Rs.20,000 per acre of cotton, they were cheated at market yards by middlemen and merchants.

While cotton farmers got Rs.3,000 per quintal during the TDP regime, they were getting Rs.1,600 only now, he said. He demanded that the Government take initiative to purchase cotton through the Cotton Corporation of India.

Contact classes postponed

WARANGAL: Contact classes of PG previous and final of School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE), Kakatiya University, scheduled to be held on December 11 and 12 at Arts College have been postponed in view of APPSC examinations.

According to the SDLCE Joint Director, M. Erragattu Swamy, the remaining schedule remains unchanged.

Meet on Gondi culture begins

UTNOOR: The three-day all-India conference on Gondi culture, dharma and literature got under way at KB Complex here on Friday. The conference was organised by the Gondwana Sahitya Mandali of Andhra Pradesh and the Tribal Writers' Forum of Adilabad.

Tribals belonging to Gond and associated tribes like Thotti, Manne, Naikpod, Pardhan and Kolam attended. The conference would be addressed by writers and tribal elders from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Orissa, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh.

The inaugural session was attended by K.M. Metry of the Department Of Tribal Studies, Kannada University, Hampi.

Four CIs transferred

ADILABAD: Four CIs in Adilabad and Karimnagar districts were transferred on Friday. According to a press release here on Friday, the Boath CI, R. Bhaskar, has been posted as Bellampalli CI. The Bellampalli CI, Raza Khan, has been posted to Sircilla (Karimnagar), Mashuq Ali from Karimnagar has been posted as Adilabad Rural CI and M. Ravi Kumar from Karimnagar as Boath CI.

Plea to RTC casual drivers

ADILABAD: The Regional Manager, RTC, Adilabad, Kesavulu Naidu, on Friday appealed to disengaged casual drivers and conductors of Adilabad region to report immediately at the RM's office.

In a press release, he said the casual employees would have to serve in Hyderabad city region. Those not reporting before December 18 would be de-listed from the approved selection list, he warned.

Sports meet of tribal students

Utnoor: The three-day district-level sports meet for tribal students of the five divisions in Adilabad was inaugurated by the Collector, J. Sudha Rani, at KB Complex here on Friday.

About 1,500 students of various tribal schools were competing in events like athletics, kho-kho, kabaddi and volleyball.

The District Sports Development Officer, D.S.R. Prasad, and the Assistant Project Officer, ITDA, Dashrath Naik, attended.
