Mini-hydel projects for Girijans favoured

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 10. The Telugu Desam president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, made a strong plea for allotment of mini-hydel projects based on waterfalls in scheduled areas to Girijans.

Intervening during question time in the Assembly today on the subject raised by several Schedule Tribe members, he said, a private party had identified the sites for the projects after a survey and wanted to go ahead with the construction. When the party approached him when he was the Chief Minister, he had proposed these units for Girijans. This could be implemented through DWCRA and CMEY groups after initial training to girijans through the APGenco.

The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, who also handles Power, told him that they would examine all aspects of the proposal before coming to a decision. He admitted that the earlier Government had proposed all the identified eight such projects for Girijans.

The Minister for Archaeology, N. Rajyalakshmi, spoke of the need for taking up a ghat road for Kondaveedu fort in Guntur district for making it a tourist attraction, but expressed helplessness of her department to sanction Rs. 3 crores required for the work in view of its meagre budget.
