CHENNAI, DEC. 10. S.J. Cleetus set up three goals as Madras Sporting Union thrashed AG's Office 6-0 in a rather one-sided semifinal of the Indian Oil State-ranking tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Friday.
AG's made a couple of early forays that were quickly repulsed, and after the first 10 minutes showed little initiative. MSU, the CFA super league champion, led 1-0 at the break after Nathaniel cut past two defenders and goalkeeper Saravana Kumar in first half injury-time. While it clearly looked the better side till then, there was no indication that this would turn into a one-sided battle. Seven minutes into the second session, AG's Rajmohan unleashed a powerful kick but MSU goalkeeper V. Devaraj managed to palm the ball out. This was, perhaps, the turning point of the match. Off a counter move, Cleetus sent the ball ahead of midfield and captain Venkatesan, who had missed a couple of chances earlier, took his time before tapping the ball home in the 53rd minute. Six minutes later, Cleetus fired a cross which Bharath converted with an elegant twist of the head. By then, AG's had already lost the game in its mind. Another Cleetus pass, in the 70th minute, met Nathaniel's left foot briefly before the ball lurched towards the net. Two more goals before the end, from Rubin Stellus and Venkatesan, only added to AG's embarrassment.
