RAJAHMUNDRY, DEC. 10. Tribals of Rajavomangi, who are used to flying visits by officials, were pleasantly surprised when the District Collector, K. S. Jawahar Reddy, made an overnight stay at their village on Thursday. Offering himself as a guest for the night to the tribals as part of the `Palle Nidra' programme undertaken by him, the Collector spent the night and the following morning in the Rajavomangi area enquiring about development activities and evolving solutions to many of the problems that were brought to his notice.
Officials warned
Dr. Reddy made it clear to local officials that they had to stay at the places of their posting or face punishment. Before winding up his stay, the Collector visited local schools and donned the role of a `teacher' to the amusement of pupils. He inquired about their studies, had pupils read out their lessons and probed their ambitions in life. On their part, the pupils welcomed the guest by rendering patriotic and folk songs. At the girls' residential high school at Aminabad, Dr. Reddy announced the sanction of Rs. 15 lakhs for creating drinking water provision, classrooms and a playground.
Incentive offered
He promised an additional Rs. 1 lakh for the school if all SSC students secured first class in the public examination. The Collector interacted with pupils of the elementary school at Komarapuram and promised local people to link their village with a permanent road with Gontivanipalem, before visiting the tribal welfare high school at Bornagudem where all hands went up when he inquired as to how many of `merit' pupils there were confident of getting a first class.
