Sunil Shastri floats new party
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
DEC. 10.
The former general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sunil Shastri, today floated a new political party.
He had resigned from the primary membership from the BJP two days ago after a long meeting with its president, L.K. Advani.
Mr. Shastri, who announced his decision here, said that he decided to take this ``difficult decision'' to take forward the dream of his father, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Mahatma Gandhi. The new party, Jai Jawan Jai Kisan Mazdoor Congress, ``would play a role in the coming Assembly elections in Haryana, Bihar and Jharkhand.'' It would take up the "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" slogan coined by his father in 1965.
Although political circles were abuzz with reports that this was the first step towards Mr. Shastri joining the Congress, he told The Hindu that ``the question does not arise'' of his going back to his parent party, which he left in 1998.
