Phagwara to host hockey meet

NEW DELHI, DEC. 10. Phagwara will host a six-team group, including three best teams from the northern region as they vie for two berths in the 53rd women's National hockey championship. Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh will play in the regional championship that includes Jammu and Kashmir, Pepsu and Himachal Pradesh, to decide which two teams make it to the main draw.

The 32 teams affiliated to the Indian Women's Hockey Federation (IWHF) have been divided into six pools with top two teams after the round-robin league qualifying it to the main tournament.

The defending champion (Railways) and the runner-up (Universities), have been directly seeded in the Nationals, though they would be playing in the regional championships too. Delhi has been clubbed with Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal and Universities and will play the regional league at Bharatpur from January 6 to 12.

With Universities already being seeded, Delhi will have to better the other three to make it to the Nationals.

The itinerary: Region I (Phagwara, January 6-12): Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Pepsu, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana. Region II (Bharatpur, January 6-12): Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal, AIU. Region III (Mumbai, January 10-14): Bombay, Air India, Vidarbha, Gujarat, Maharashtra. Region IV (Ranchi, January 5-9): Bihar, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Manipur, Bengal, Assam. Region V (Chhattisgarh, January 4-12): Madhya Pradesh, Bundelkhand, Bhopal, Chhattisgarh, Orissa. Region VI (Bangalore, January 10-12): Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Railways.
