BJP takes exception to police officer's statement

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 10. The State general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, H. Raja, today took exception to the Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police, K. Premkumar's threat to move court against columnist S. Gurumurthy.

Reacting to his statement that he would seek legal action against Mr. Gurumurthy and others for making "wild allegations" against him, Mr. Raja asked whether the SP would explain how the police interrogation of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, including photographs taken of the seer, which should have been kept confidential, was "leaked to the Press."

False information

Again, he alleged, the police team, which was investigating the Sankararaman murder case, was feeding "false information" to the Press to malign the Kanchi Mutt.

He wanted the Government to take suitable action against police officers for giving such information to the media.
