Power theft detected

KOCHI, DEC. 10. The anti-power theft squad of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) led by Vigilance IG M.N. Krishnamoorthy has found theft and misuse of power amounting to more than Rs. 10 crores by many companies in the State.

The squad conducted raids in 170 companies that had been identified as defaulters. The raid, named Operation Jyoti, was conducted from December 8 to December 10. These companies had defaulted around Rs. 330 crores to the Board.

Instances of power theft were found from Toyo Fisheries, Thoppumpady; K.R. Alloys, Kanjikode; Sreelekshmi Electro Smelters, Aluva; and Lekshmi Chemical Industries, Edayar.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy declared cash awards to the members of the squad for tracing power theft to the tune of Rs. 5 crores by Sreelekshmi Electro Smelters, Aluva, an official press release said here today.

Found guilty

The Ernakulam CBI Special Court today declared guilty the two accused in the murder of police constable Lonappan.

According to the police case, Shahir alias `Chakkakuru' Shahir of Nellukadavu, Fort Kochi, and Biju alias `Vettalan' Biju were engaged in burglary on September 9, 2003, when the police party from Fort Kochi police station interrupted them. During the scuffle that followed, Shahir stabbed Lonappan. The constable later died at the Medical Trust Hospital. The police had registered a case under crime number 137/04. The Circle Inspector Ratheesh Krishnan led the investigation and a charge-sheet was filed on November 11, 2003. The trial was completed today and the CBI Special Court Judge, Kamal Basha, found the accused guilty of the murder. The sentence will be declared on December 13.
