VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 10. A two-day exhibition of global technology products for the benefit of the visually challenged, being organised by the Mumbai-based Karishma Enterprises, was formally inaugurated by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, T. Krishna Prasad, at the YMCA here on Friday. The Head of the Special Education Department of Andhra University, Ranganadham, the District Educational Officer, Surender Reddy, Ram Agarwal of Karishma Enterprises and the director of the Hellen Keller Memorial School for the Blind, D. Hemant Kumar, spoke on the importance of making available the latest technologies to the visually impaired to provide equal opportunities for them in all spheres.
`Talking mobile'
Mr. Agarwal, who had gradually lost his vision when he was in his 30s, has acquired the distributorship rights for the global products in a bid to make them available in India. He launched the talking mobile phone at the exhibition on Friday. He underlined the need for sensitising the Government and voluntary organisations to provide financial assistance to institutions working for the welfare of the visually challenged so that the latter could acquire the sophisticated gadgets for the benefit of visually challenged students and employees. Computers powered by the JAWS (Job Access with Speech) and a mini Braille Press were displayed at the exhibition. Students and teachers of the Hellen Keller Memorial School and teachers of Netra Vidyalayam (a special school run by the Jeeyar Educational Trust participated in the programme.
