MOHALI, DEC. 11. A naval institute should be set up in the northern region to train and widen the scope of employment oppurtunities for the youth in the area, Punjab Governor S F Rodrigues today said. Emphasising the need for setting up an apex body to evolve a mechanism for establishing such an institute in this region, he said the institute will impart quality education to the youth in various disciplines in the field. ``Such an institute can help in widening the scope of employment opportunities for the youth of the northern region in shipping companies in the government and private sectors'', Rodrigues said while inaugurating a seminar organised by Merchant officers Association here. The Governor asked the Merchant Navy Officers Association based in Chandigarh to take the initiative in this direction and undertake the responsibility for producing trained manpower for this challenging and interesting career. On the occasion, Rodrigues presented fixed deposit arranged by the Merchant Navy Officers Association to a child of Kargil Martyrs Jaswinder Singh. Speaking on the occasion, G S Sahni, Director General Shipping said that 60 per cent of the manpower in the shipping companies was from North India and it was therefore, very essential to set up an institute in this region. There are 12 major ports and 100 minor ports facilitating international trade activity in the country and in the next 10 years an investment of Rs.2000 crore was expected in the shipping business, he said. - PTI
