Policy to encourage lignite-based power projects

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR, DEC. 11. The Rajasthan Government will shortly formulate a policy to encourage lignite-based power projects for facilitating establishment and functioning of these plants.

The Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, instructed the officials to prepare the draft of the policy here on Friday.

Reviewing the power situation at a meeting, Ms. Raje noted that a record 9.18-crore units of power per day were being supplied throughout the State and the figure showed an increase by 90-lakh units as against the previous year's consumption.

The Chief Minister took stock of the measures taken to supply electricity to various regions and augment the power generation capacity.

Referring to the ambitious Barsinghsar lignite power project executed by the Nyeveli Lignite Corporation, Ms. Raje said its capacity would be 250 MW and the State Government had already allotted land for the plant. The work on the project was held up for the past two decades.

Ms. Raje also reviewed the progress of the Giral lignite power plant being constructed in Jaisalmer district as well as the 330 MW gas-based power plant in Dholpur.

She said the State Government would take measures to supply electricity to meet additional demand projected at 4,600 MW during the 11th Five Year Plan.

The Chief Minister instructed the officials to ensure supply of power for agricultural purpose in the rural areas and domestic purpose in the urban areas in accordance with the norms and undertake rigorous monitoring of supply by making surprise visits.

She said the complaints in power sector made by elected representatives would be taken seriously and grievances settled.

The damaged, out-of-order and burnt transformers would be replaced without delay, while the causes of obstructions in feeders will be probed instantly to find out the negligence of officials.

The Chairman and Managing Director of Rajasthan Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, S. Ahmed, said the corporation had launched helpline service at all district headquarters recently to attend the complaints of consumers.

The Chief Secretary, R.K. Nair, and Energy Secretary, Yaduvendra Mathur, also attended the meeting.
