Ankita wins title

By Amitabha Das Sharma

KOLKATA, DEC. 11. Second-seeded Ankita Bhambri won the Tata Steel sponsored $10,000 ITF women's circuit title here on Saturday.

In the final at the Bengal Tennis Association complex, Ankita defeated sixth-seeded Wiliwan Choptang of Thailand 6-3, 7-5. However, Choptang, partnering Indian Shruti Dhawan, defeated Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri, the second seeds, 6-2, 7-5 for the doubles title.

The singles final was a lopsided affair as Ankita dominated the proceedings against an error-prone Choptang. The Thai had raised the expectations with her gutsy show in the semifinal, where she had defeated Indian Isha Lakhani.

Consolation win

In the doubles final, Choptang and Dhawan won in 85 minutes. Dhawan and Choptang broke the second-seeded pair in the fourth, sixth and eighth games to win the first set. The second set witnessed a keen contest before the fourth-seeded duo won the title.

The results (finals):

Singles: Ankita Bhambri (Ind) bt Wiliwan Choptang (Tha) 6-3, 7-5.

Doubles: Wiliwan Choptang (Tha)/Shruti Dhawan (Ind) bt Ankita Bhambri/Sanaa Bhambri (Ind) 6-2, 7-5.
