Hanumanthappa, secretary general of the district unit, and Mullangie Ravi, said that area under cotton cultivation had had doubled this year. To prevent distress sale and avoid exploitation, the CCI should intervene and purchase cotton from the farmers directly, which would ensure price stability, Mr. Reddy said.

He said that a delegation of cotton growers, led by Kurgodu MLA, Suryanarayan Reddy, would meet the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and other Ministers and urge them to take a decision in this regard soon.

Mr. Ravi, while stating that the quality of the cotton produced was good, underlined the need for fixing the support price at Rs. 2,500 per quintal.
