Bellary
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, DEC. 11. Kumaraswamy, former president of Bellary City Municipal Council, survived an attempt on his life by a few unidentified youths here on Saturday morning. Mr. Kumarswamy, after his morning routine, was returning home on his two-wheeler when four unidentified persons attacked him with machetes on District Court Road. Mr. Kumarswamy suffered a bleeding injury on his back and minor injuries in his head. Vannur Sab, Mr. Kumaraswamy's friend, narrated the incident (as told to him by the latter). He said that Mr. Kumaraswamy slowed down as two persons were crossing the road. Just then two youths, wielding machetes, attacked him from behind. Mr. Kumaraswamy, who suspected danger after spotting two persons near the Court premises, tried to speed away. The machete, which was aimed at his neck, hit his back. He then rode directly to the Gandhi Nagar Police Station to lodge a complaint, Mr. Sab said. A case has been registered. The police, led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bheemaiah, rushed Mr. Kumaraswamy to the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences. The doctors at the hospital said that Mr. Kumaraswamy was now out of danger, Mr. Sab said. Mr. Kumaraswamy's son, Raghavendra, nominated councillor, was murdered near the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus depot a few days after the general elections. Political rivalry was said to be the reason behind the murder. Four persons had been arrested in this connection and three were still at large, the police said. The police will also be investigating if the two incidents are inter-linked. The Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress condemned the attack on Mr. Kumaraswamy.
