Anantapur
By Our Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR, DEC. 11. In a shocking incident, an officer of the Dharmavaram branch of the State Bank of India in Anantapur district allegedly confined family members of a borrower for more than 24 hours by locking their house from outside. According to the police and information reaching here, Mahesh took a loan of Rs. 2 lakhs from the bank a few years ago. Since then the bank had been serving notices on him asking him to repay but without success. The field officer of the bank, Gopi Ram, went to the residence of Mahesh on Friday afternoon to press for repayment. The borrower's wife, Padmalatha, told him that her husband was out of station. This irritated Mr. Gopi Ram who allegedly locked the house with Padmalatha, two of her children, Lokesh and Shruti, and daughter of a neighbour inside. Mahesh's neighbours noticed it only this afternoon and reported the matter to the police. The police broke open the lock at around 3.30 p.m. Later CPI activists staged a dharna in front of the bank protesting against the "inhuman attitude'' of the bankers.
