MUMBAI, DEC. 11. Faced with fierce demonstrations by Shiv Sena activists against the Union Petroleum Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, the Petroleum Employees' Union today postponed its function here to be attended by him. "The function has been postponed but it will be held sometime later this month, following a decision by our committee," the union general secretary, Nandkishor Khanvilkar, told PTI. He, however, did not attribute any reason for the postponement. Earlier in the day, Sena activists pelted stones and raised slogans against the Minister, who was to attend the golden jubilee year of the union at Wadala in central Mumbai. The Sena activists, led by Mohan Rawle, MP, were protesting against Mr. Aiyar, who was in the city on his maiden visit after the controversy triggered by the removal of a plaque containing Veer Savarkar's verses at the Cellular Jail in Port Blair ahead of the October 13 Assembly polls in Maharashtra. A heavy posse of police was pressed into service to quell the mob. The police twice canecharged the agitating activists when they attempted to barge into the venue. PTI
