THANJAVUR, DEC. 11. The BJP State general secretary, H. Raja, today said that in the interest of justice, the Sankaracharya case should be handed over to the CBI. He wanted the Centre to amend the law so that the CBI could take over a case and conduct investigation without waiting either for the State Government to hand over the case or a court directive. He cited the example of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States which could suo motu take up cases. Mr. Raja said that it was not the BJP, but the Democratic Progressive Alliance, particularly the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which was communalising the Acharya's arrest. The criticism directed at the Acharya was not against an individual but against the Kanchi Sankara Mutt and Hinduism. He alleged that the investigating team had selectively leaked photographs and news to the media on what happened during police custody of the Sankaracharya. They should be kept secret.
