Stone laid for TRS building

HYDERABAD: The foundation stone for the headquarters building of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) was laid on the one-acre land allotted to the party recently by the Government at Banjara Hills, on Saturday.

The ceremony, which was held with much fanfare, was witnessed by leaders of other parties which are votaries of the Telangana State.

The Union Labour Minister and TRS president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, and the Union Minister of State for Rural Development, A. Narendra, took part in the ceremony conducted by heads of three religions. The People's Democratic Front (PDF) president, Mahbooba Mufti, the Rashtriya Lok Dal president, Ajit Singh, the PMK president, P. Ramadoss, the MDMK MP, C. Krishnan, the Indian Union Muslim League MP, Abdul Sattar Mujahid, the Nationalist Congress Party secretary, Gajanand Dalu Guruji, and others were present.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Ajit Singh said his party was in favour of smaller States as it would facilitate faster development. He said the demand for Statehood to Telangana was genuine as it was a 50-year old movement which witnessed several sacrifices. Mr. Singh said Telangana State was a certainty even if the Congress went back on its promise to concede the demand.

Cinegoers' Film Awards fete on December 19

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Cinegoers 34th Annual Film Awards function will be held on December 19 at Shilpakala Vedika, here. The Shoban Babu's Rolling Shields for Best Actor, Actress and Director will be given away by Dasari Narayana Rao, Union Minster for Coal and Mines.

S. Jaipal Reddy, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, will inaugurate the function in which the Karnataka Chief Minister, Dharam Singh, will participate. Among others attending are K. Keshav Rao, APCC president, J. Geeta Reddy and Mohd. Ali Shabbir, Ministers besides a large number of actors and actresses.

B. Kishan, general secretary of the association, said in a press release on Saturday that the lifetime achievement awards would be given to G. Krishna and Vijayanirmala for their outstanding contribution to the industry.

CPI(M) takes exception to RSS leader's remark

NALGONDA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, has come down heavily on the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader, Sudarshan, for his comments against the former Chief Minister, Jyothi Basu, at a meeting in Khammam yesterday.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Raghavulu dubbed the allegations as "cheap remarks'' against the stalwart. Taking serious exception to the allegation that Mr. Basu had used public money to arrange a lift for his house, he dared the RSS leader to approach courts in this regard.

State conference

According to the CPI(M) secretary, the party State conference (mahasabha) would be held from January 25 to 28 in Warangal. A massive rally would be organised on January 28, which would be attended by the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddadeb Bhattacharya, and other senior leaders. The party district committee secretary, Ch. Sitaramulu, announced that the party's district level conference would be held from December 28 to 30 at Nakrekal.

Ex-MCPI activist done to death

NELLORE: S. Ramachandraiah (45), said to be formerly associated with the Marxist Communist Party, was brutally murdered by unidentified persons at Chintareddipalem Donka area near Children's Park on Saturday.

According to the police, the deceased, along with his son, was going on a cycle when the miscreants, travelling in an auto rickshaw, dashed against the cycle resulting in both falling on the road.

The miscreants swooped on Ramachandraiah and attacked him with lethal weapons, resulting in his instantaneous death. The culprits escaped in the same vehicle. Old enmity was said to be the reason for the murder.

Farmer killed in land dispute

Kakinada: As a sequel to a land dispute, Mattuparti Venkateswerlu (70), a farmer of Tanukuvada village of Kajuluru Mandal was stabbed to death allegedly by Asnasuri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana of the same village on Saturday. According to Karapa police, who registered a case, the accused waylaid the victim on the Godavari canal bund when he was returning home from his fields and attacked him with a knife.

Nagarala leaders seek

BC status

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Andhra Pradesh Nagarala Sangham (APNS) has demanded inclusion of the community in Backward Classes list.

The APNS State president, B. Venkata Rao, the 23rd ward corporator, J. Appala Raju, the Telugu Desam Party's urban district convener, M. Sundaram Patrudu, and others told reporters here on Thursday that they were still groping in the dark on the reasons for excluding their community from BCs list in 1970. Though the subsequent BC commissions headed by Muralidhar Rao and Puttuswamy had recommended their inclusion in the BC category, due to court rulings and others reasons, they had been denied BC status, Mr. Venkata Rao said.

He wanted the Congress Government to nominate two members from the community to the proposed State Legislative Council.

Rise in temperatures

Hyderabad: Temperatures rose at a few places in Telangana and Rayalaseema on Saturday and they changed little in Coastal Andhra. Weather was dry in the State. The lowest night temperature of 13 degrees Celsius was recorded in Nizamabad, Medak and Ramagundam. The Met office said dry weather would continue on Sunday.

Free eye, dental camp

MADANAPALLE: A free eye camp, ear, nose, throat and dental camp, will conducted for schoolchildren jointly by the Rotary Madanapalle Mid-town Club, Oasis, and the District Blindness Control Society on December 14 at the Z.P. High School, Kalakada, according to T. Sreenivasa Gupta, Oasis president.

Temple fete

CUDDAPAH: Dhanurmasa Adhyayanostavam will be held in Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Swamy temple at Devunicuddapah from December 12 to January 15, the temple Executive Officer, Venkata Subba Reddy, said on Saturday.

Dhanurmasa `harathi' would be given to the presiding deities from 4 a.m. daily and devotees could have special darshan of Sri Venkateswara at 4 a.m. and `Vaikuntha Dwara Darshanam' on `Mukkoti Ekadasi' festival on December 22, he said. Devotees could have a special darshan of the deities from midnight on December 31 in view of New Year and Sri Andal, Tayaru utsavam would be held from January 4 to 15, he added.

Seminar for aqua ryots

NELLORE: A seminar to create awareness among aqua farmers will held at Nellore, on January 6.

Authorities of Marine Exports Development Authority (MPEDA), exporters and officials are expected to attend the meet. Farmers will be provided with the know-how, to effectively use anti-biotics.

According to available information, a seminar will also be held at the Government Fisheries College, Muttukur, on December 18.

Dance festival

NELLORE: A State-level dance festival is to be held at Town Hall, Nellore, on December 12.

There will be competitions in Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and folk dances and winners will be awarded prizes on the same day.

Farewell to RTC official

NELLORE: A function was held at the Padma Palace, Nellore, on Sunday, to accord farewell, to the RTC Divisional Manager, Nellore, G. Sudesh Kumar, who was transferred to Cuddapah.

The function was held under the auspices of APSRTC Karmik Sangh, affiliated to the Bharteeya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS).

Tension in two villages

NELLORE: The fight for irrigation water between Mallam and Tirumuru villages of Gudur sub-division continued on Saturday as the authorities mobilised police on a large scale.

A piquant situation has arisen with ayacutdars of both villages obstructing the channels alleging illegal drawing of water on each side.
