Award for NTPC

NEW DELHI DEC. 11. The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has been adjudged the third best employer in India by the leading global human resources management firm, Hewitt Associates, in association with CNBC-TV18. The award was presented by the Union Minister for Communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran, to the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, C.P. Jain, K.K. Sinha, Director (HR), and P. Narasimharamulu, Director (Finance), at a function in New Delhi over the week-end.

Of memory loss and dementia

NEW DELHI DEC. 11. Every memory loss is not dementia and every dementia is not Alzheimer's disease, according to the President of the Heart Care Foundation of India, K.K. Aggarwal. He was speaking at a public discussion in the Capital here today.

M.M.Mehandiratta of the Neurology Department of G.B. Pant Hospital, Vinit Suri, Senior Neurologist of Apollo Hospital, and Senior Ayurvedic physician, S.P. Tripathi, also participated in the discussion.

The experts opined that after attaining the age of 40 it was not normal to have some degree of memory impairment. Age-related memory impairment was severe enough to impair a person's social life and one should consult a doctor to rule out minimum cognitive impairment of disease, which could lead to dementia later life.

They said according to Ayurvedic physiology cow's milk and ghee was good for delaying the onset of dementia and new medicines were available to treat and control this disease.

Raising Day week

NEW DELHI DEC. 11 .The Directorate-General of Home Guard and Civil Defence celebrated its Raising Day week from November 29 to December 6 here. The Home Guard and Civil Defence volunteers enthusiastically participated in organising ramps and `prabhat pheries' to spread the message of "Nishkam Sewa".

Activities like sports and professional competitions were also organised. Large number of Home Guard and Civil Defence volunteers and school children participated in fire- fighting, rescue, relief operations and first aid competitions.

Monograph on Bismillah Khan

NEW DELHI DEC. 11. A monograph on shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan will be released on March 21 next year to mobilise funds for orphans, art and music students across the country. The date has been deliberately chosen to coincide with Mr. Khan's 90th birthday.

The monograph -- the first of its kind -- has been written and compiled by Neena Jha, a Science teacher at St. Thomas School, Ghaziabad, to felicitate the shehnai maestro for his more than 86-year contribution in the Indian classical music.

The 200-page monograph has accommodated more than 15 chapters including the "Cultural transformation in India (especially Uttar Pradesh), the Holy Ganga: The Mother of Swar, changing tune of Sa-Re-Ga-Ma, Fate of a Holy city: Varanasi, Voice of over one billion people and awards and recognitions".

The South Asia News Network International has accepted the responsibility to publish the monograph, which contains more than 150 pictures.

Property tax bills

NEW DELHI DEC. 11 .The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has issued over 3, 500 bills of property tax for the year 2004-2005 to various taxpayers in different categories.

According to an NDMC release, if any tax payee does not receive his bill by December 15 or she he could collect a duplicate copy of the same from the office of Senior A.O. (Tax), 18th floor, Palika Kendra from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on all working days up to December 24.

New PHDCCI chief

NEW DELHI DEC. 11 .K.N. Memani, the former Chairman and Country Managing Partner of Ernst and Young, has taken over as the President of the Punjab, Haryana and Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the year 2004-05. Sushma Berlia, the President of Apeejay Satya Group, has been elected as the Vice-President of PHDCCI. They were elected unanimously at the first meeting of the re-constituted Managing Committee of the Chamber.
